La capacidad instalada de IBERDROLA RENOVABLES ha alcanzado los 10.003 MW a finales del primer semestre de 2009, con lo que la Empresa se consolida como líder mundial en energía eólica. Esto supone un incremento de 2.054 MW (un 25,8%) respecto al mismo periodo del año anterior.
Estos 10.003 MW, que equivalen a la capacidad de diez centrales nucleares medias españolas, pueden evitar la liberación de aproximadamente 8 millones de toneladas de CO2 a la atmósfera al año y proporcionar electricidad a unos 20 millones de españoles (el 45% de la población total).
Más de la mitad de los nuevos megavatios (1.121 MW) se ha instalado en Estados Unidos, donde la potencia alcanzaba los 3.104 MW a 30 de junio tras incrementarse un 56,6% en doce meses. Una parte importante del crecimiento de la Compañía se concentra en este país debido, entre otros factores, al entorno regulatorio favorable que se está desarrollando.
En el Reino Unido, otro de los mercados prioritarios para IBERDROLA RENOVABLES, la potencia instalada aumentó un 48,8%, hasta 790 MW.
En España, la capacidad eólica instalada se situaba en 4.730 MW el pasado 30 de junio, con un alza de 347 MW en doce meses. Además, en España la Compañía cuenta con 342 MW correspondientes a centrales minihidráulicas, y 50 MW de la primera planta termosolar de la Compañía en Puertollano (Ciudad Real). En conjunto, suman 5.124 MW, el 51,2% del total.
Por Comunidades Autónomas, Castilla La Mancha es la que concentra mayor capacidad instalada, con 1.981 MW a finales del primer semestre. Le siguen Castilla y León (1.120 MW), Galicia (627 MW), Andalucía (512 MW), Aragón (278 MW), La Rioja (248 MW), País Vasco (153 MW), Murcia (76 MW), Valencia (56 MW), Navarra (44 MW), Cantabria (23 MW), Extremadura (5 MW) y Madrid (1 MW).
En el Resto del Mundo, la potencia instalada alcanzaba los 985 MW a 30 de junio, tras aumentar un 38,7% en los últimos doce meses. La Compañía cuenta con 235 MW en Francia, 217 MW en Grecia, 161 MW en Polonia, 92 MW en Portugal, 80 MW en México, 63 MW en Alemania, 50 MW en Hungría, 49 MW en Brasil y 38 MW en Italia.
En el periodo de enero a junio de 2009, la capacidad instalada de la Compañía aumentó en 701 MW, que se reparten como sigue: 257 MW en España, 227 MW en Estados Unidos, 125 MW en el Reino Unido y 92 MW en el Resto del Mundo.
IBERDROLA RENOVABLES ha incrementado la producción de energía eléctrica un 23,7% en los últimos doce meses, hasta 10.585 millones de kWh, de los que el 44% (4.658 millones de kWh) corresponden a energía eólica en España. Destacan los aumentos en el Reino Unido (del 57,5%) y Estados Unidos (45,3%). El 96,8% de la producción de la Compañía (10.249 millones de kWh) corresponde a energía eólica.

IBERDROLA RENOVABLES ended the first half of 2009 with 10,003 MW of installed capacity, strengthening its position as the world’s leading wind energy company. This represents an increase of 2,054 MW (25.8%) from the same period last year.
This capacity of 10,003 MW, equivalent to 10 average-sized Spanish nuclear power plants, could avoid the emission of 8,000,000 tonnes of CO2 a year and supply power to some 20 million Spaniards (45% of the population).
More than half of the new capacity (1,121 MW) was installed in the US, taking the total there to 3,104 MW as of 30th June, 56.6% higher than the year-earlier figure. A significant part of the company’s growth is taking place in the US, due, among other factors, to a favourable regulatory environment.
Installed capacity in the UK, another of IBERDROLA RENOVABLES’ priority markets, rose 48.8% to 790 MW.
In Spain, installed wind energy capacity stood at 4,730 MW at 30th June, marking a 347 MW increase over the previous 12 months. The company also has 342 MW of small-scale hydroelectric power in Spain, and 50 MW at the company’s first solar thermal plant in Puertollano. In total renewable capacity in the country amounts to 5,124 MW or 51.2% of total installed capacity.
